Let me get right on that “writing a bestseller” thing.
Nope, my book still hasn’t sold. But there is hope. . . .
Someone once asked me what the “point” of any of my creative pursuits is if I don’t make money. Well, there’s someone who should never practice any kind of art ever.
A writer once said that there needs to be a balance between what people want to read and what you want to write. What do you think?
Depends why you’re writing. There doesn’t “need to be” any permission or perception from outside for you to be allowed to write anything you want. If however you want to write something and get it published and get people to pay for the pleasure of reading it, what they think does matter. If what you write doesn’t happen to be what they want to pay to read AND getting them to pay for what you write is more important to you than having it completely your way, you might compromise. Ideally, only small changes have to be made in order to make it palatable for the masses, because I wouldn’t want to change my entire deal just to get published (and I wouldn’t).
